Adder Vipera berus
 
Identification: Dark zig-zag shape along the back. Dark spots on the flanks interlock with the zigzag on the back. Dark "V" pointing backwards from the back of the head. Verticaly slit eye. Males are black/grey agaist a white/cream background, females are brown/red against a cream/orange background.
Information: Widely distributed throughout Britain in suitable heathland or woodland habitats.
Similar species: Grass Snake, Smooth Snake.
