Red Grouse Lagopus lagopus
 
Identification: Red-brown plumage with white feet.
Information: Distribution: resident on moorland in western and northern Britain.
Similar species: Ptarmigan is the same size but has grey/white or all white plumage and occurs at altitude in the Scottish Highlands. Black Grouse: males are black with white wing markings, females are more like Red Grouse but are larger and have white underwings. They live in a variety of upland habitats in western and northern Britain. Capercaillie is a very large grouse that occurs in mature pine forests in northern Scotland.
