Ruff Philomachus pugnax
Identification: Males in breeding plumage are easy to identify. Females and immatures have dull orange legs and a slightly decurved bill. Base of bill is surrounded by pale feathers. Size is variable. Small head gives distinct outline. Usually in small groups. Experience is needed to identify this fairly non-descript species.
Information: Distribution: breeds at a few sites scattered across England, passage migrant and winter visitor along the south coast.
