Velvet Scoter Melanitta fusca
 
Identification: Stocky black sea duck. Males have yellow on bill and the white in secondaries is distinctive in flight, but not always visible on the sea. Females have a pale cheek patch and white secondaries.
Information: Distribution: scarce winter visitor to coastal British Isles.
Similar species: Common Scoter: males are smaller with no yellow on bill or white in the wing. females have no white in wing and have large pale patch on cheek and neck.
